The Jonathan Hyde Mysteries

Two mysteries regarding Mr. Hyde have surfaced during the construction of this web site...

The first concerns his 1994 appearance in Cadfael: The Leper of St. Giles. Mr. Hyde plays Godfrid Piccard, guardian to a beautiful young heiress who is the last of a noble house. The mystery begins with the front cover of the package for this tape. It features a picture of some of the lepers seen in the episode, and one of them is--quite clearly--Mr. Hyde. Confused? Me too. Why was he costumed and made up as a leper when he did not play one in the story?

On the left, holding the staff, 'tis JH to be sure!

There is a possibility that the script originally called for him to play a dual role; the storyline could easily account for that with some very minor changes. There is also the possibility that it is not Mr. Hyde in the picture, but that is very doubtful as eyebrows don't lie!

The second mystery concerns Mr. Hyde's ancestry. I recently came across the picture below and noticed a remarkable resemblance between this gentleman (the Earl of Surrey) and Mr. Hyde. It would not surprise me in the least to learn JH has noble ancestry (although the words "sheer coincidence" do come to mind).
