TITANIC

as J. Bruce Ismay

J. Bruce Ismay was a very controversial figure after the sinking of the Titanic. Although exonerated in the hearings following the disaster, the issue of his culpability was never really resolved in the minds of many.

Titanic Quotes from Jonathan Hyde

:On Ismay's part in the disaster -

"I think Ismay is more or less directly blamed for the reckless speed at which the ship was traveling. Ismay was always saying, 'Of course I'm just a passenger,' but it was slightly dishonest to twist the captain's arm that way. Whether he did it blatantly or subtly, it was coercion. Later Smith gave Ismay an ice warning, and he showed it to one of the passengers as if to say, 'What a lot of poppycock.' You know, 'Fat chance we'll be sunk by a piece of ice.' Perhaps Captain Smith was giving Ismay a subtle reminder that he was at least partly responsible for their speed at the time. One could say Ismay was a little bit arrogant."

Regarding the two-day filming of the dinner party scene -

"The caviar was very high quality. I made an acting decision on the spot that Ismay was a big eater."

Referring to the enormous [listing] ship replica built for the outdoor set -

"It was very surreal to be driving down the coast and suddenly discover this wounded leviathan. I wonder if anyone has phoned the Coast Guard saying, 'There's a rather expensive-looking ship over there and I think it's in trouble.'"
