Firestorm (1998).  Portrays Loomis, a convict who participates in an escape effort which leaves guards and prisoners alike dead. He and four other escapees then flee through fire-engulfed mountainous terrain trying to reach freedom and a multi-million dollar cache of stolen money.  Unknown to him however, one of his companions is a cunning and twisted murderer with his own agenda.  Result: death by betrayal (pushed over a cliff).

This movie could have easily been just another typical action movie, and indeed the plot is quite formulaic, but its actors bring about a "sum is greater than its parts" result with their excellent efforts.  Virtually everyone involved seems to have taken up the challenge to make the most of his or her role and the resulting strong character depictions do wonders in helping the audience get past lame dialogue and contrived situations.

Note:  During the movie it is revealed that Loomis is a former Air Force officer gone bad.  Now why does that sound so familiar?
